Tomasz Pugacewicz, PhD

Doctor of Political Science and Assistant Professor at the Chair in International Relations and Foreign Policy of the Institute of Political Science and International Relations of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków.

He completed a master programme in International Relations at the Institute of Political Science and International Relations of the Jagiellonian University and interdisciplinary doctoral studies in the field of American Studies at the Institute of American Studies and Polish Diaspora of the Jagiellonian University.

In 2015, he defended his doctoral dissertation titled Mechanizmy kształtowania polityki zagranicznej USA wobec państw regionu Morza Kaspijskiego po 1991 roku [U.S. foreign policy decision making towards the countries of the Caspian region after 1991] with honours at the Institute of Political Science and International Relations of the Jagiellonian University. The theoretical aspects of this dissertation were published in the monograph Teorie polityki zagranicznej. Perspektywa amerykańskiej analizy polityki zagranicznej [Theories of Foreign Policy. American FPA Perspective] (Kraków: Jagiellonian University Press, 2017). The Polish International Studies Association (PTSM) acknowledged this book as the best original International Relations monograph published in 2017. The book also won a distinction in the national Czesław Mosiejewicz Competition organised by the Polish Political Science Association (PTNP) for the best book on political science published in 2017. In the context of this monograph, the Rector of the Jagiellonian University awarded the author with the individual prize for university teachers for scholarly achievements.

During his internships abroad, he was a visiting researcher at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies of the Johns Hopkins University in Washington DC and participated in a bilateral exchange programme at the Heidelberg University and the State University of New York (SUNY).

He also conducted research at the University of California at Berkeley and Columbia University in New York, as well as the Rockefeller Archive Center and the Kościuszko Foundation in New York.

In 2018, he received a grant from the Polish National Science Centre (NCN) for the project titled “Between Center and Periphery: A Comparison of Ludwik Ehrlich's Theoretical Concepts with American-British International Relations in the Frist Half of the Twenty Century”. Between 2011 and 2014, he completed a NCN research grant related with the subject of his dissertation. Holder of several scholarships, e.g. the scholarship for the best doctoral candidates of the Jagiellonian University and the scholarship of the Copernicus Society in America.

Between the end of 2017 and the beginning of 2019, the Deputy Director at the English-language MA Programme in International Security and Development (ISAD).

Participant of several workshops, trainings, and summer schools, organised among others, by the International Studies Association, European Consortium for Political Research, Panteion University of Athens, Foundation for Polish Science, and Polish International Studies Association.

In 2021, he was nominated by students for the "Student Laudations" awards in the "Student Mentor" category. In 2022, awarded for the high quality of didactic work based on the survey evaluation of classes.

In 2015, he participated in the Ideas Lab — the Young Professionals Programme at the Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland.
