Expert debate "How to solve the EU migration crisis?"

On 28 March 2019 the expert debate entitled „How to solve the EU migration crisis?” took place in the Building of the Faculty of Law and Administration of the Jagiellonian University. The debate was inaugurated by prof. dr hab. Zdzisław Mach, Dean of the Faculty of International and Political Studies at the Jagiellonian University, who welcomed academic staff and students gathered in the Aula.

The debate began with the speech of prof. dr hab. Janusz J. Węc, head of the Chair of Studies on Integration Processes in INPiSM UJ and a project manager Jean Monnet Chair: EUCRIS: European Union in Crisis: What is Wrong and How to Fix It. Prof. dr hab. Janusz J. Węc briefly described a dynamics of the migration crisis and solutions implemented by the EU in the ears 2015-2016.

Dr. Hab. Dariusz Niedźwiedzki, prof. UJ, director of the Institute of European Studies of the Jagiellonian University, head of the Jagiellonian Center for Migration Studies, pointed at several factors that influence the creation of a common EU migration policy. Second speech was delivered by Dr Krystian Spodaryk, an employee of the European Commission, an expert on decentralization and security sector reform in the EU Delegation in Ghana who presented how the main migration routes from the countries of West and Central Africa and from the Horn of Africa to Europe have evolved. Ms. Katarzyna Ryde, representative of the Polish Medical Mission, responsible for the activities of this organization in Jordan, mentioned the problems that must be faced by the authorities of the countries where refugee camps are organized. Dr Zbigniew Czubiński from the Chair in International Relations and Foreign Policy, INPiSM UJ in his speech discussed in detail the case law of the Court of Justice of the EU and selected judgments of domestic courts. Dr. Agnieszka Nitszke from the Chair of Studies on Integration Processes, INPiSM UJ, as a last expert in the debate presented and assessed actions of the EC and the Member States aimed at reforming the Common European Asylum System.

After the experts' speeches, a discussion took place, in which various proposals for action to solve the problem of illegal migrants arriving in the EU were discussed. The speeches by experts will be published in a book in July 2019.
