Report from the EUCRIS Jean Monnet Chair conference on the Treaty of Lisbon

On December 13-14, 2017 the scientific conference entitled "Treaty of Lisbon. A good solution in times of crisis?" was held at the Auditorium Maximum UJ in Krakow. The conference was organized by the Chair of Studies on Integration Processes of the Jagiellonian University under the Jean Monnet Chair EUCRIS project, whose head is prof. Janusz Węc. The main reason for organizing the conference was the tenth anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Lisbon. Thus it was a good opportunity to evaluate the effectiveness and adequacy of Treaty provisions, especially during the migration, economic and institutional-democratic crises in EU.

The conference was inaugurated by prof. dr hab. Ewa Bujwid-Kurek, Vice-Dean for Research in the Faculty of International and Political Studies and dr hab. Robert Kłosowicz, prof. UJ, Head of the Institute of Political Studies and International Relations. Conference started with two plenary panels with politicians and experts. In first one took part: Adam Jarubas (Vice president of the Polskie Stronnictwo Ludowe, marshal of the Świętokryzskie voivodeship), Ryszard Śmiałek (president of the Sojusz Lewicy Demokratycznej in Młopolska region) and Kamil Bortniczuk (Porozumienie political party).  This panel was moderated by prof. Stanisław Biernat, former vice-president of the Polish Constitutional Tribunal. The panel of experts was moderated by prof. Janusz Węc with participation of prof. Stanisław Biernat, dr hab. Arkadiusz Stempin (Tishner European University in Kraków), dr Filip Skawiński (Representation of the European Commission in Poland) and dr Zbigniew Czubiński (Institute of Political Studies and International Relation, Jagiellonian University).

During the two days of conference 50 speakers from 14 different universities took part in 14 thematic panels were. Interesting speeches and fruitful discussions provided good opportunity to make a comprehensive evaluation of Lisbon Treaty provisions such as decision making procedures, civil rights and freedoms, common foreign and security policies, common security and defense policy as well as the most important sectoral public polices of the EU.

This scientific conference was one of the three others which are going to be organized in JMC EURCRIS project.
